The following are resources I have found helpful

  The Dash diet (website)
This diet is recommended by the Joint National Committee on Hypertension as a diet that should be adopted by all to prevent hypertension as well as by those with high blood pressure. It also happens to meet recommendations for the portions of fruit and vegetables that help prevent certain cancers.

The portfolio diet
This diet is even more effective than the low-fat diet at reducing cholesterol, and is worth a thought. A typical breakfast includes oat bran, fruit and soy milk. Lunch can involve vegetarian chili, oat bran bread and tomato. A typical dinner has vegetable curry, a soy burger, Northern beans, barley, okra, eggplant, cauliflower, onions and red peppers. In the study, volunteers also received Metamucil three times a day, for soluble fiber from psyllium. Stay tuned for further information on this diet or contact me directly for more information.

Shape magazine (website)
This site is content-rich and includes discussions of effective exercises, and also some recipes and eating plans, but also ideas on motivation and on making changes to one's attitude and outlook. The magazine will be available in Spanish as of October 2003.

Cooking Light magazine (website)
This magazine focuses on attractive recipes for low-fat food, but also contains ideas for exercise, and may be better suited than Shape to folks who are absolute beginners when it comes to exercise. In my opinion, the recipes tend to have too much refined flour and sugar to be truly healthy, but they can be delicious and useful. Cooking Light has restricted web access to folks who have bought an issue of the magazine at the newsstand or are interested in a subscription offer.

Dean Ornish, M.D.
His books, "Reversing Heart Disease", "Eat More, Weigh Less", and "Everyday Cooking with Dean Ornish", are classics of the "very low fat" school of thought. More than anything, Dr. Ornish should be commended for doing careful scientific studies of the methods he proposes. The criticism that his advice is too hard to follow may be true for some but definitely not for all individuals. Additional information is available at www.my.webmd.com/content/pages/9/3068_9408.htm

Berkeley Wellness Letter (website)
This has long been a source of reliable information. If they say it is true, chances are it is. No fads here, and no unproven methods.

For health care providers
If you are a physician, nurse practitioner, a health educator, nutritionist, or trainer, and you would like some information on the best ways to help your clients with issues concerning health behavior change, I recommend the following links:
